Are You Spreading Yourself Too Thin?

It’s so easy to be overwhelmed today with all these different online channels available to grow your author platform and build a community around your author brand and books.

There isn’t a week that goes by, where I don’t hear the frustration of an overwhelmed author, who is clearly spreading themselves to thin.

Do you know someone in this situation? Perhaps you feel a little overwhelmed yourself?

It’s so easy to be distracted by all the BSO’s (Bright Shiny Objects) around the interwebs today. As a result, focus is lost and a sense of overwhelm is found.

As an author, your goal is to steadily build a loyal community around your author brand and books. This happens over time, not overnight. To do this, requires focus and the concentration of your time in just a few specific areas.

Spreading yourself over a dozen channels from Facebook, forums, Twitter and blogging, increases your risk of diluting your voice, being heard and being effective in any one of these channels. This can hurt you, as it creates a receipe for further frustration and can even result in you becoming disenchanted with building your platform altogether.

Book sales come from being heard and being effective. Do this by knowing who your audience is, knowing this is critical, otherwise it’s like being in the desert without a compass. You may find your audience is mainly on Facebook and Goodreads. Or you may find maintaining a quality blog, doing guest posts on higher profile websites and speaking on the side is your most powerful strategy.

Focus your time using the few key tools that help you reach the majority of your target market, then communicate and give value to that target audience.

Find your focus and you’ll find your readers and say goodbye to overwhelm.

  1. This is a good point. I’ve also been lured by the sparkly new Google+ and assumed it a better platform because I have so many more followers there, but, I find Twitter actually produces book sales for me.

  2. Promotion is tough and never ending, and there’s so much competition out there. Over the years I’ve spread myself too thin but at least I recognized it and made changes when I needed to. Virtual book tours and blog hops have been good for me. This was a good article!
